In the lab, we performed a multitude of tests with accordance to ASTM standards or other applicable standards. We usually have two types of materials which are soils and aggregates. Soils are typically sand and fine aggregates like silt and clay. Aggregates are usually rocks or gravel with large amount of sample. The two materials have different tests and procedures; however, there are three tests that will be run for almost all samples/materials. The three tests are PIs, Gradation, and Proctors.

PI (Plasticity Index): Procedure to understand a soil’s plastic limit and liquid limit. Plastic limit is the point of moisture when the soil starts behaving like a plastic. Liquid limit is the point before the soil behaves like a liquid. For more information, reference to ASTM D4318.

Gradations (Sieve Analysis): A procedure used to classify the sample. Classifications include clay, sand, gravel, and silt. However, it is important to note that are other classifications like lean clay, silty clay, and gravely sand. For more information, reference to ASTM D6913.

Proctors: A test to understand the soil’s maximum density and optimum densities. The densities will tell the client if the soil is at the right moisture level for the job. There are different methods and types. One of the most common is ASTM D698.

TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY: Standard Testing used the interns on projects with the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (OTA), for bridge replacement projects on the JKT and the new alignments on the EOC east of OKC.

Standard also used the interns to run proctors and PI’s for an ODOT project SH-48 over Cimarron River in Creek County.
